On January 26, 2020, people everywhere were shocked by a helicopter crash. The crash killed famous NBA basketball player Kobe Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter Gianna. Basketball fans were extremely sad to lose Gianna. She was a talented young player with a bright future.
Four months after the terrible accident, an autopsy report came out. The report described the serious injuries Gianna and others faced in the crash.
Who is Gigi ?
Gianna Bryant was born in Los Angeles, California to parents Vanessa and Kobe Bryant. She had an older sister named Natalia and two younger sisters, Bianka and Capri. Her mom is Mexican and her dad is African-American. Gianna’s grandfather Joe Bryant was an NBA player. Her great-uncle John “Chubby” Cox also played basketball.
Gianna started playing basketball because of her dad Kobe. He would take her to his NBA games where she would shoot around with the team before the games started. When Gianna was in fourth grade, she went on a school trip to see a Los Angeles Sparks women’s basketball game. After that, she said “I will play in the WNBA, I promise.”
Gianna played basketball for the Mamba Sports Academy. Her dad Kobe coached her team from ages 10 to 15 years old.
How GIGi Death ?
In the morning of January 26, 2020, at 9:06 a.m., a Sikorsky S-76 helicopter took off from John Wayne Airport in Orange County, California. On board were nine people: Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna, six of their friends, and the pilot. The helicopter was owned by a company called Island Express Holding Corp. They were all heading to a basketball game at the Mamba Academy in Thousand Oaks, after flying to Camarillo Airport.
The weather was bad that morning, with light rain and fog, which had even grounded police helicopters. The helicopter had to circle around the L.A. Zoo because of busy skies. At 9:30 a.m., the pilot spoke to the control tower at Burbank Airport because he was flying too low for the radar to see him properly. They were getting into thicker fog and turned toward some mountains. By 9:40 a.m., the helicopter had shot up from 1,200 to 2,000 feet high, moving at 161 knots.
Then at 9:45 a.m., the helicopter crashed into a mountain in Calabasas, around 30 miles from central Los Angeles, and caught fire, which also spread to the nearby area. Tragically, Kobe, his daughter, and the seven others on board didn’t survive. The crash sparked a small bush fire too. At 9:47 a.m., emergency services were alerted. Firefighters from the Los Angeles County Fire Department came quickly, and medics even had to come down from a helicopter to look for any survivors. The fire was tough to put out because there was magnesium around, but it was out by 10:30 a.m. Early reports said the crash happened because of the dense fog, and some witnesses said they heard the helicopter having trouble before it went down.
Gigi Autospy Report
The autopsy results for 13-year-old Gianna Bryant were made public on January 28, 2020. The report showed that Gianna passed away from injuries to her head and neck suffered in the helicopter accident that also took the life of her father, basketball star Kobe Bryant, and seven others on January 26, 2020.
The report confirmed that Gianna had no alcohol or drugs in her system at the time of the crash. Investigators believe the pilot may have become disoriented in the fog, leading to the loss of control of the helicopter. Though unconfirmed by her family, some have speculated Gianna’s final words to her father may have been “I don’t want to die, dad.” We can only imagine the fear and sadness she must have felt in those final moments.
Above all, the autopsy makes clear that a young life full of promise was tragically cut short that day. Gianna was a shining light to her family and community. She is deeply missed.
